A funny thing happened on the way to lunch . . .

A funny thing happened when my 88 year old mother got in the car with her 83 year old friend to go to lunch at their favorite Chinese restaurant last week. They got lost.  Never mind that both of them have lived in this small town for more than 60 years.  Never mind that the restaurant is less than 2 miles from my mom's house.  Never mind that they have been to this restaurant many times over many years.  They headed in the direction of the restaurant but neither of them could remember where the it was located.
I'd be concerned if I thought they were in any real danger but like them, I just thought it was funny.  This is a small town (about 13K residents) and somewhat Mayberryish in character so they were unlikely to go very far or get into much trouble.  I asked my mom if they ever found the restaurant and her first response was, "I don't know.  I think so."  Her short-term memory is pretty bad now but after thinking about it for a while, she recalled that they eventually did find it and had a wonderful time!

I'm glad that she and her friend can laugh at this misstep.  So often, older people become frightened by an experience like this and just retreat further into their already small world.  This is another example of, "Laugh and the world laughs with you.  Cry and you cry alone." It's better for them them to laugh it off and just keep on going.

So, if you happen to see a couple of old women driving in circles and looking confused, stop them and ask if they're looking for the Chinese restaurant.  They'll thank you for it.
