Meet Williame

Allow me to introduce you to Williame Jacques.  Williame is 10 years old and lives north of Limbe, Haiti.  Julia and I have the privilege of being his new sponsor with Compassion International.

We continue to support a Christian orphanage in Mexico (as we have for many years), but we have not sponsored a child through an organization such as Compassion since our first sponsored child moved away from the program several years ago.  I was motivated to explore sponsorship again following the February earthquake in Haiti.  I researched various relief  organizations and found that there are many good ones but decided that Compassion most closely aligned with my philosophy about providing aid to impoverished children.  I love their tag line:  Releasing children from poverty in Jesus' name and I like that all of their centers are housed in existing local churches.   The more I read, the more convinced I became that we should sponsor a child through Compassion and specifically, a child in Haiti.  But there was a hitch.  Compassion suspended new sponsorships in Haiti following the earthquake until the whereabouts and status of the Haitian children already in their program could be determined.

While waiting for sponsorships to open up again, I had the opportunity to spend a week in Haiti in June with a medical mission team in the city of Limbe and in the surrounding countryside in the northern part of Haiti.  (I wrote about that experience beginning here.)  When sponsorships finally opened up again in Haiti , I learned that Compassion has a center in Limbe and promptly made a request to sponsor the boy who had been on their waiting list for the longest time.  That's how we came to sponsor this particular child.

I don't know what the future hold for Williame but I intend for our relationship with him to be positive and supportive.  I've learned that these children value the relationship they have with their sponsors and are more successful when their sponsors write to them regularly.  I intend for Williame to hear from me regularly.  I figure that I have 8 years to get to know Williame, his parents, and 6 siblings and I'm looking forward to the adventure it will be for all of us.
